The Impact of Carsharing on the Willingness to Postpone a Car Purchase: A Case Study in Hangzhou, China

Cities in China are facing challenges due to the rapid growth of cars. Carsharing is considered a possible way to alleviate this problem, as many studies indicate that carsharing has a positive impact on urban traffic. However, only few studies have been in China. In-depth research is urgently needed, since the scale of carsharing in China has grown rapidly in recent years. A discrete choice model was established to study the willingness to postpone car purchase with participation in carsharing. Unlike previous studies, the authors not only included the variables involved in the questionnaire, but also the variables related to the usage characteristics extracted from studies on rental data and global positioning system (GPS) data. About 50% of respondents thinks that they will postpone car purchase by participating in carsharing. The results of the discrete choice model indicate that the willingness to postpone car purchase is associated with the motivation to join carsharing, satisfaction, frequency of usage, the purpose of travel, travel characteristics, and whether the car purchase plan is definite. This research contributes to efforts to pinpoint the orientation of carsharing and can guide the operation of carsharing enterprises and the formulation of relevant policies and regulations.
