Response Analysis of Airport Composite Pavement Using Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing
In this paper, the effects of temperature, interface bonding, and load level on airport composite pavement response were investigated through accelerated pavement testing (APT) experiments and a numerical modelling method. A full-scale field test was performed to analyze the response of hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay in airport composite pavement system. A total number of 20 strain gauges and 32 temperature sensors were embedded in the composite pavement. Three interface bonding conditions, three pavement temperatures, and two load levels were evaluated in the field test. Then, a finite element model was established to extend the understanding of HMA overlay response. The parameters of the model were obtained from laboratory experiment results, and the model was also validated through field measurements. The investigation found that longitudinal tensile strain in HMA overlay was more critical than the transverse tensile strain, and its maximum value appeared in the middle layer of HMA overlay. Additionally, temperature significantly influenced HMA overlay response. When pavement temperature rose from 15 °C to 45 °C, magnitude of strain increased 450%. Furthermore, interface bonding condition was a significant factor for HMA overlay performance. It was also found that the relationship between interface bonding and response was nonlinear, and there was a turning point in the curve of interface bonding and response.
