Structural Behavior of Cracks in Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements

Continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCPs) are an important type of concrete pavement which have been used extensively by many transportation agencies. Recently, the use of short length CRCPs (50-m long slabs) has been proposed for bus stops and terminals. Since the behavior of short CRCPs may be different from that of conventional CRCPs, a comprehensive evaluation of short length CRCP behavior was conducted. This paper examined structural behavior of cracks in short CRCPs. This included analysis of Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) deflections and strain gage measurements obtained from a full-scale test section constructed at the University of São Paulo (USP) campus as well as structural modeling of the pavement behavior using ISLAB2000. An analysis of the influence of cracks on the FWD deflection basins collected on the short CRCP pavement were examined. The same analysis was conducted for conventional CRCP using the FWD deflection data collected under the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Program for 47 CRCP sections located in 22 states. A very similar behavior between the short CRCP pavement and conventional CRCPs was observed. Also, the effect of CRCP cracks on stresses in CRCP pavements was investigated. Three ISLAB2000 models differing by the concrete base model or crack model were developed and their stress predictions were compared with the stresses measured in the short CRCP pavement. An applicability of the conventional aggregate interlock model for describing behavior of short CRCPs was evaluated. A need for re-appraisal of the PavementME structural model is also discussed.
