EVALUATION OF A NEW WAVE-RESISTANCE FORMULA FOR A WEDGE-LIKE SHIP BOW FORM
In this thesis, a new wave-resistance formula, which may be regarded as a generalization of the classical formulas proposed by Michell in 1898 and Hogner in 1932, is investigated numerically, and compared with the formulas of Michell and Hogner for the simple case of a wedge-like ship-bow form. The differences between the novel wave-resistance approximation and the classical approximations are found to be quite significant, especially at low Froude number. In particular, the wave-resistance curves of the new approximation are much less oscillatory than those of the Michell approximation. The results obtained in this thesis are encouraging and suggest that the present new approximation may remedy to some of the typical discrepancies between theoretical and experimental wave-resistance curves.
