The Fundamental Experiment for Remotely Controlled Small Vessels


Under the circumstances of a shortage of sailors, aging of the labor force and measures of a human error, the study related to remote control of ship steering has attracted attention. Unlike an auto-pilot command, a remote control of ship steering need to transmit environmental information of a ship and that of the surroundings by a low delay as possible. In this study, the authors consider a requiring function of steering ship by remote control. The authors conduct a basic experiment using small vessel. As a consequence of the experiment, it was possible to steer the ship from remote places. However, through realization of a safe remote control of ship steering, some problems the authors have to solve reveal. The first problem is acquisition and providing of information about a tidal current, wind direction and wind speed. The second is ship direction toward all-round video image. The third is display of areas the authors have to focus on. In the future, the authors need to consider a simple method of synchronizing and displaying for ship operators in a remote place.
