THE TENSILE STRESS IN A CYLINDER SUBJECT TO THE POINT LOAD TEST

The tensile stress in a cylinder subject to the point load test is studied. This test is for practical reasons one of the most common indirect methods of measuring the tensile strength of rock. In particular the influence of Poisson's number is demonstrated. Experimental results for Plexiglas show excellent agreement with the theory. (TRRL)
