SOME NEW ASPECTS OF THE BRAZILIAN TEST

Different theoretical arguments lead to contradictory results concerning the accuracy of the two-dimensional approximation of the stress field in a sample subjected to the Brazilian test. Strain gauge measurements indicate that this approximation is surprisingly accurate. A comparison between the uniaxial tensile test, the Brazilian test and the point load test for Bohus granite and Ekeberg marble does, however, lead to the conclusion that the latter test is preferable for most reasons.
