RIB-IN-ROC METHOD FOR REINFORCEMENT OF ROCK CAVERNS: FEM CALCULATION OF STRESS REDISTRIBUTION

The armed ribs of concrete are casted in blasted drifts of ribs before the large rock cavern is constructed. The rock casing and the ribs are interacting in order to carry the additional stresses that arise during construction. In this report is shown a rough estimate of the influence of the ribs on the distribution of these stresses. Linear elastical conditions are assumed. Calculations have also been made with the finite element method (fem). A program called femrot has been used. A comparison between the analytical solution and the fem solution shows a great conformity for a value of 3.2 of the ratio between the outer and the inner radius. The diagrams in the report show very local stress variations between the rock mass and the ribs. (TRRL)
