DEFLECTION OF P.V.C. PIPE UNDER BURIAL CONDITIONS

In the design of buried, non-pressurized (gravity flow) piping systems using flexible pipe such as that manufactured of polyvinylchloride (pvc), the resistance of the pipe to deflection is provided by a combination of the inherent stiffness of the pipe and the lateral support provided by the soil around the pipe. This article considers the Spangler formula, and its modification, for calculating deflection. Values of soil modulus of passive resistivity for four soil classes are tabulated, and for these soil types maximum long term deflections (per cent) of pvc pipe for a range of pipe dimension ratios, and densities, and height of fill are presented.
