TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL. CURRENT STATE AND PLANNING OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES BY THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF ROAD RESEARCH (BAST)

SCHULISCHE UND AUSSERSCHULISCHE VERKEHRSERZIEHUNG. STAND UD PLANUNG DER FORSCHUN SAKTIVITAETEN DER BUNDESANSTALT FUER STRASSENWSEN

The problem of safety in traffic is taken as the starting point in the traffic education research programme of the Federal Institute of Road Research. The basis of the empirical foundation of traffic education is seen on the one hand in the requirements of road traffic (for various age groups and for various forms of traffic participation, etc) and on the other hand in development- and socialisation-dependent assumptions. From both there results a traffic education objective from which the following crucial points are derived: learning conditions and teaching processes (possibilities of conditioning, practice, automation, ways and means of transferring knowledge), institutional conditions such as the condition of teaching personnel. Further important points are seen as the development of curricular instruction units and of evaluation (development of criteria and processes of efficiency control in the teaching sphere, processing of efficiency controls, detection of weak areas and achievement of proposals for improvement). In the second section the results of the only project of traffic education undertaken in the terms of the above proposals are described. A final chapter is devoted to future traffic education research by the Federal Institute of Road Research. (TRRL)
