BEARING CAPACITY - THE SOCIETY'S ECONOMICAL USEFULNESS IN THE REINFORCEMENT OF ROADS

BAERIGHET - SAMHAELLSEKONOMISK NYTTA VID FOERSTAERKNING AV VAEGAR

This report compares the traffic economic usefulness to the cost of increasing the bearing capacity of the part of the public network of roads, which does not allow a vehicle load of 10 tons axle weight and 16 tons bogie weight, and of the bridges on the 10/16 network of roads which do not allow this load. This study has been made in four provinces of Sweden, Vaermland, Gaevleborg, Vaesternorrland and jaemtland. All the calculations in the study are based upon the price level of 1976. The profit made in the transportation of goods, if the bearing capacity of all the roads in the whole country were increased is estimated at ca 5-20 millions Swedish kronor pr annum and the profit obtained in strengthening all the bridges on the 10/16 network is estimated at ca 3-8 millions kronor pr annum. Three alternatives of increasing the bearing capacity of the roads are studied. In every alternative a profit is made in the transportation of goods. The report states that a general strengthening of the 8/12 network of roads is not the most economical measure, instead special roads must be built, where either the traffic or the cost relations are different from the mean 8/12 road or where the measures taken can be motivated by other transport economic reasons.
