INFLUENCE OF ROADSIDE OBSTRUCTION MARKINGS ON VEHICLE SPEED AND LATERAL POSITION

SIDOHINDERSMARKERINGARS INVERKAN PAA FORDONS HASTIGHET OCH SIDOLAEGE

The purpose was to determine the influence of the marking of roadside obstructions on the speed and lateral position of vehicles. Three kinds of obstructions, road narrowing, bridge rails and guardrails, along roads with various speed limits were investigated. The speeds and lateral positions of vehicles were determined at 7 locations in the Stockholm area during the summer of 1978. The measurements were carried out as before-after studies. The obstruction was initially unmarked and then marked in conformity with current traffic regulations. The following results were obtained: (1) the marking of road narrowing resulted in an increased lateral clearance between vehicles and road edge, (2) the marking of a bridge rail resulted in a slightly increased lateral clearance between vehicles and road edge, (3) the markings of a guardrail had no significant influence on the lateral position of vehicles, and (4) the marking of obstructions on roads with a speed limit of 90 km/h resulted in a significant speed reduction. On roads with a speed limit of 70 km/h no such speed reduction could be established. (TRRL)
