DEVELOPING AN OPTIMUM CLASSIFICATION STRATEGY FOR RAIL FREIGHT CARS

This paper describes development of a model that would generate an optimum rail classification strategy. With mathematical optimization, the model determines the best classification strategy for a given rail system considering the activities at all yards simultaneously. A preliminary model has been completed and favorable results were obtained from an actual test case.
