This article describes lengths of Britain's first continuously reinforced concrete overlay, 100 mm and 130 mm thick, being laid over 1.8 km of concrete carriageway of trunk road a3 near horndean, hampshire. The existing carriageway has been experimental, with various combinations of slab thickness and density of reinforcement. Joints below the overlay are being taped, and expansion catered for by a galvanised universal beam joint at each end of the new construction. Modifications to the Guntert and Zimmerman Paver allows concrete to be delivered to the front of the machine and reinforcement to remain intact during concreting operation. Adjustment of paver height is by pick-up wires fixed along both channel lines. Performance of the slab will be monitored by the TRRL. (TRRL)
