DESIGN FATIGUE STRENGTH INTO BRIDGE WELDS

The most important factors governing fatigue strength are the stress range and the type of welded detail. These findings hold true for every type of detail -- rolled beams, welded beams, beams with groove-welded flange splices, beams with cover plates, and beams with welded stiffeners and attachments. Accordingly, for fatigue life, designers need only consider the live load and impact stresses when planning welded bridges. Both can be calculated by determining fluctuations in bridge traffic and wind forces.
