WINTER ROADS AND ICE BRIDGES

In order to realize development of the La Grande Hydroelectric Complex in the James Bay Territory of northern Quebec Province, Canada, the cold weather had to be capitalized on for construction of winter roads and ice bridges. In that inaccessible part of the country, which is covered mostly with weak soils and muskeg, winter road transportation provided a practical means of ground access to the various construction sites in the development. Standardized procedures, methods and controls have been set to meet the requirements of traffic with loads up to 70 tons. Construction costs, considered in the article, point out that the cost to build ice bridges was more or less independent of bridge length.
