RESEARCH ON ECONOMY AND NOISE

Research at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) into the environmental characteristics of goods vehicles is described, designed to provide information on which to base legislative developments and to provide information to the industry to assist them in meeting such legislation. Data are presented and discussed on proved means of fuel-saving related to vehicle characteristics, load carried, speed and road geometric design standards. It is suggested that further research is required to improve information on component characteristics. Noise levels are considered in relation to the eec directives and the declared intention of aiming for 80 db(a) limits for all vehicles in 1985. Research at TRRL over the last seven years on the development of quiet heavy lorries is described. Data presented indicate that when the programme started, a 350 hp Rolls Royce Foden was producing drive-past noise levels of approximately 92 db(a), but that at today's stage of research drive-past noise levels of below 80 db(a) can be obtained with noise levels in the cab between 72 and 75 db(a). The vehicle changes undertaken during this research programme are described and discussed. This paper was presented at the 1979 Annual Conference of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers. (TRRL)
