PROBLEMS IN SOIL-LIME STABILIZATION OPERATIONS, AND SOME INDICATIONS FROM EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES

PROBLEMI DI ESECUZIONE DEI LAVORI IN TERRA-CALCE ED INDICAZIONI FORNITE DA STUDI SPERIMENTALI

This article reviews the action of lime in clay soils and examines some of the problems connected with earth works and road construction involving lime stabilization. A description is given of the implementation of soil stabilization studies, from preliminary investigations to the detailed laboratory analyses necessary to the final project design. The results of previous research by the authors are used to demonstrate the effects of mixing and compaction factors on the mechanical performance of soil-lime mixtures. The paper provides some useful findings for contract specifications, as well as guidelines for supervisory staff and contractors, with regard to overall efficiency in soil stabilization. (TRRL)
