It is now almost 10 years since the first barge carrying vessel -- BCV -- entered service. While at the time, and for regular periods since, the BCV has been proclaimed as the ultimate in intermodal transport and the answer to a developing nation's shipping requirements. BCVs appear not to have fulfilled this promise. New designs of BCVs could change this, however, particularly those which do not rely on lifting the barges but utilize a float-on/off method. One such vessel is currently under construction in Germany and is the first large ship to break the LASH/Seabee monopoly. Whether this will herald a new enthusiasm for BCVs remains to be seen.
