INFLUENCE OF SOME STEELMAKING VARIABLES ON SHIP PLATE WELDMENT TOUGHNESS

Weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) toughness levels were determined for submerged arc welds made in 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) thick ABS EH32 ship plates produced with three modifications: substituting a quench and temper heat treatment for standard normalizing; microalloying with 0.05% Cb and adding REM sulfide inclusion shape control. Only the 0.05% Cb addition improved the coarse grained HAZ CVN energy of welds made with either 50 or 75 kJ/in. (2000 or 3000 kJ/m) heat inputs.
