Hydroseeding Makes Transportation Projects Move

This article explores some of the current transportation-related uses of hydroseeding, using the case study of the Burlington, Northern, Sante Fe, and Frisco Railroad (BNSF). The author first briefly reviews the history of the multitude of railroads that contributed to the formation of the BNSF and then describes the role of hydroseeding in a major construction project along the tracks in North Dakota. The project needed to establish or re-establish vegetation along 120 miles of railroad tracks, between Minot, ND and Snowden, Montana. The article describes how the work was done, the seed used in the project, the use of a bonded fiber matrix in the hydroseeding mix, adding color to the mix, the equipment used, and the impact of weather on hydroseeding progress. The author then turns to another case study – hydroseeding at the Devore Interchange on Interstate 15 where it intersects I-215 in San Bernardino County, California. The author focuses on two issues of concern: hydroseeding in areas of high winds and coping with the heavy volume of traffic (the road is a major route between Los Angeles, CA and Las Vegas, NV). Topics discussed include the use of native seed mixes, soil conditions in the work areas, and the equipment used. The next example discussed in the article is the Asheville (North Carolina) Regional Airport, which is in the midst of replacing its main runway and the grassy areas around the runway, taxiways, and airport buildings. This section focuses on the hydroseeding issues when working on a slope – the airport is located in the mountains of western North Carolina. Other topics covered include the use of a tractor for seeding, the need for soil amendments, and working in various weather conditions. The final case study covers Dominion Boulevard, a major road and bridge project in Chesapeake, Virginia, for which a hydroseeding project covered about 70 acres of roadside, shoulders, medians, and around ponds. The author concludes by reminding readers that hydroseeding efforts are part of helping transportation projects to be environmentally compliant.
