This is a review in which several types of high-performance rudder, designed to improve ship-handling as compared with conventional rudders, are described and discussed. The rudders concerned are: the Pleuger active rudder; the Becker flapped rudder; the Towmaster shutter rudder (a new development by Burness, Corlett & Partners--a propeller nozzle made of "modified" grp for fishing-vessels--is also briefly discussed); the Y-ARD Rotorudder; the Jastram rotor-rudder and T-rudder (the latter has a rotating cylinder at the leading edge and a flap at the trailing edge); and the Schilling rudder (a brief account is included of rudder trials, in the Thames, of a 1,200-dwt cargo-ship fitted with a single Schilling rudder).
