Developing a Younger Driver Assessment Tool Technical Memorandum #1
The trucking industry faces a substantial shortage of truck drivers. Recruiting young drivers, aged 18-25, could help to address this shortage. Young drivers, however, are characterized by elevated risk compared to older drivers. This report looks at the characteristics of young drivers, including personality, health factors, and cognition, and how they relate to driving safety. It is the first phase in developing an assessment tool to identify and recruit young safe drivers. In the next phase, researchers will investigate whether driver characteristics can predict safe driving outcomes.
