Focus on Freight: Article 2 - Where Can The Big Rigs Park?
There is a critical, nationwide shortage of parking spaces for semitrailer trucks carrying the nation's freight. This leads to increased costs for freight movement and safety risks for drivers. The authors give an overview of the problem and discuss what is being done to make it easier for drivers to find available parking. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued the report Jason’s Law Truck Parking Survey Results and Comparative Analysis, which revealed that the approximately 308,000 truck parking spaces are inadequate to meet the needs of 5.6 million commercial motor-vehicle drivers in the United States, The solution requires partnerships among various public and private agencies. The National Truck Parking Coalition was formed in 2015 to advance safe truck parking. Four areas have been identified in which the problem must be addressed: parking capacity; technology and data; funding, finance, and regulations; and coordination of state, regional, and local governments.
