Connected Vehicles: Coming Soon to A Road Near You

This article gives an overview of pilot testing of connected vehicles taking place in various parts of the country, under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Transportation. The authors discuss the potential for connected-vehicle technology to increase travel efficiency and to reduce fuel consumption, congestion, and the rate of crashes and resultant fatalities. A pilot program to accelerate deployment of connected-vehicle technologies was launched in 2015. It will also measure the impacts of the technologies and determine barriers to deployment. The pilot program is being implemented in New York City, Tampa, and rural Wyoming. The Smart City Challenge is also discussed, as are the ways that Columbus, Ohio, is using advanced, wireless, communication technology to build an intelligent community. USDOT will build upon these efforts by awarding additional grants through its Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program.
