TOWARDS RATIONAL DETERMINATION OF MAINTENANCE NEEDS AND PRIORITIES FOR PAVEMENTS

This paper was presented at Session 17 - Pavement Management Systems 2. The determination of special maintenance requirements for pavements such as overlays and reseals is becoming an increasingly more important task for highway and municipal engineers. This paper presents an overview of current maintenance management practices in South Africa. It is evident that there is scope for initiating changes in their practices. The National Institute for Transport and Road Research is currently developing, in co-operation with road authorities, formal methods for the determination of special maintenance needs and priorities. The needs for such formal methods and the experimental approach adopted are discussed. Finally, typical elements of models developed for determining special maintenance needs for rural and urban road authorities are discussed. (TRRL)
