This paper was presented at session 15 - pavement materials. It deals with the experience gained in the laboratory in the stabilisation of a plastic gravel with tar. The knowledge gained in this exercise was used in the field in 1964 in the stabilisation of two non-standard plastic gravels (pi about 12). These sections of road are still in good condition. A further investigation has since been carried out to assess the effect of gravel plasticity and tar grade on tar/soil mixtures at the laboratory level and the work to date is recorded. This work will eventually be extended to the field. (TRRL)
