VENTILATION OF ROAD TUNNELS ALONG ITS AXIS; THE LOCATION OF FANS AFFECTS THE TOTAL EFFICIENCY

Ventilation systems in Norwegian road tunnels are based on longitudinal ventilation. For this purpose axial fans mounted under the tunnel roof are employed. The overall efficiency of the fans depends on their location, and A great deal of interest is focused on this relationship. In a joint project between SINTEF (The Foundation of Scientific and Industrial Research), the County of Hordaland Highway Authorities, and the public roads administration a series of measurements have been performed to investigate this relationship. The data obtained so far indicate that the fan efficiency depends on the distance between the fan and the tunnel roof, also there is a marked difference in the recorded efficiency for smooth and uneven surfaces.
