BITUMEN: REVIEW OF UTILISATION TECHNIQUES

LE BITUME: PANORAMA DES TECHNIQUES D'UTILISATION

This paper was presented to the Conference on Bituminous Binders and Materials, Paris, 3 March 1977. Bitumen applications result from its specific properties. Bitumen is viscoelastic; of low thermal susceptibility; a good insulating and waterproofing agent resistant to external effects, impact and deformation. For these reasons it is applied in road construction in subbases, roadbases and surfacings, each of which require one or several of its properties. In this field, hot-applied materials, cutback bitumen, as well as emulsions are used. These same qualities are valid in hydraulics works for the construction of dams, canal and river linings, reservoirs as well as marine construction. Industrial applications, whilst representing a fairly low percentage compared to road applications, are extremely diversified, from waterproofing of roofs to manufacture of paints and pipe linings. /TRRL/
