THE STEERING BEHAVIOUR OF CARS. COMPARISON BETWEEN EXPERIMENT AND THEORY

Experimental research into the frequency spectra of motor vehicles allows dynamic handling to be objectively characterized. In order to achieve a small scatter in the measured points the vehicle speed should be maintained at the same value for all frequencies studied. The measured frequency spectra are checked against conceptual models when the non-steady friction characteristics and wavering are allowed for. In the experiments which were carried out the highest values of the excitation frequency amounted to approximately 1.8 hz and the highest value of lateral acceleration approximately 0.35 G. /TRRL/
