SAFETY BELT ANALYSIS BY MEANS OF APPROPRIATE PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE ACCIDENT SITE

With the help of simulation dummies described in the report and with the data collected from actual occurrences it is shown that it is possible, using accident photographs, to obtain precise correlation between injuries and vehicle interiors. The possibility exists of reconstructing the course of movement of car occupants during an accident by means of actual accident photographs. An incorrectly placed safety belt can be identified and from this, with the help of damage and injury photographs, it is possible to recognise the possible diving traction- or swinging-effects of movement by the occupants. A plan, drawn from information gained during the post-crash inquiry, shows clearly the facts about construction or handling faults in the safety-system and enables new questions, themselves uncertain at the time of the enquiry, to be answered. An attempt should be made using existing techniques to achieve better correlation, since it has been demonstrated that an important application of such in-depth studies shows the method of representing actual accidents in trials, which serve to determine bio-mechanical stress limits in terms of protection criteria. The extent to which the simulation dummies will hold good for the various types of vehicles and safety belt systems will be shown by future photographic experience. A report will be given of the results achieved with these dummies in due course. /TRRL/
