GAS IN THE TANK. SAURER GAS-ENGINES IN LORRIES AND BUSES

GAS IM TANK. SAURER-GASMOTOREN IN LKW UND BUS

At the Geneva commercial motor show in 1978, the Swiss heavy goods vehicle manufacturer, Saurer, presented experimental vehicles with gas engines. They were in the form of straight six cylinder machines of the well known D2K series with 12.5 litre capacity which for gas operation were changed from the diesel to the Otto-cycle function. In place of injectors there were sparking-plugs, instead of the injector pump there was a distributor and an end speed controller, and a low maintenance transistorized coil ignition with corresponding composite generating system completed the alterations to the power unit. The supply of fuel from the gas tank is taken in liquid form. Its transformation into gaseous condition takes place in a vapouriser built on to the engine, and in a mixing chamber inlet air is added to the mixture. On grounds of economy the greatest number of original parts from the diesel engine were used for the gas motor. The vertical six-cylinder engine is suitable, in the form of the gas-engine D2K-G, for installation in heavy goods vehicles, and for mounting in buses the horizontal version of the series machine, gas-engine D2KU-G, is fitted. Compared to the diesel engine the liquid gas motor exhibits the following positive qualities: less mechanical loading, therefore longer life; less abrasion, less pollution; longer intervals between oil changes; very good cold start qualities; flexible mixing system, therefore smoke free combustion in all service conditons; less manufacture of gaseous pollutants NO(x), CO, HC; virtually odourless exhaust gases; less combustion noise. In passenger traffic using buses, the chances for liquid gas motors would increase considerably if the state granted similar relief for lpg (liquified petroleum gas) users as occurs in many places by means of the gas oil tax refund. /TRRL/
