Experimental and Analytical Evaluation of Residual Capacity and Repair Methods for Corrosion-Damaged Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders

Several aging bridges with prestressed concrete girders have been identified in the Commonwealth of Virginia as showing significant signs of deterioration. The deterioration includes severe spalling, delamination, exposed prestressing strands, and section loss. Deterioration has been identified on both bulb tee girders and adjacent members. The Virginia Department of Transportation recently replaced two bridges that had several bridge members in various stages of deterioration. These deteriorated members have been available to Virginia Tech researchers for destructive testing to determine the remaining capacity, stress distribution, and methods for repair.
