QUANTIFYING THE CARGO HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS OF RO/RO SHIPS

After briefly considering, in general terms, the importance of turnround time and the effects of the introduction of roll-on/roll-off techniques, the Authors discuss assessment criteria for ro/ro cargo handling. The various aspects of this type of cargo-handling are examined, and formulae for quantifying the corresponding characteristics and their relationships are discussed, under the headings--Ships' Cargo-Handling Characteristics; Cargo-Handling Characteristics of the Access Arrangements of Ro/Ro Ships; Ballasting the Trim System Characteristics; Lashing and Securing Equipment Characteristics. The study of ship influence on berth throughput has revealed a number of parameters that are difficult to quantify, and it would appear that, in addition to the search for analytical expressions, statistical modelling of the ship/berth system could be useful in further work on this problem.
