With rising fuel costs railroads are stressing energy conservation, not only in train service but also in lighting, heating and air conditioning of shops and offices, in compressed air and electrical power supplies, and in locomotive fueling, standby engine protection and other places. Train performance is being closely monitored and altered. Some roads have active promotion campaigns for energy conservation.
