THE HYDRODYNAMICALLY LUBRICATED JOURNAL BEARING WITH MISALIGNED SHAFT AND AXIAL OIL GROOVE SUBJECTED TO PERIODICALLY VARYING LOAD

The paper describes briefly the theory behind the computer program TRA-BEAR 4, which can be employed to analyze a dynamically loaded fluid film lubricated journal bearing. A distinctive quality of this program is that the bearing may have axial oil grooves and misaligned shaft. The main purpose of the analysis is to find the locus which the shaft centre follows within the clearance circle of the bearing. This is done by employing a marching-out technique, requiring that at distinctive points on this locus the shaft centre velocity is such that the resulting pressure distribution, described by Reynolds' boundary condition for the fluid film disruption in circumferential direction, this shaft centre velocity is found by means of an iterative procedure. Reynolds' equation is solved by use of the finite element method. Finally, some computed results are included.
