MAN AS A VEHICLE DRIVER. INFORMATION INTAKE AND PROCESSING BY DRIVERS. REPORT PHASE I

DER MENSCH ALS FAHRZEUGFUEHRER. INFORMATIONSAUFNAHME UND VERARBEITUNG DURCH DEN MENSCHEN. BERICHT PHASE 1

Human error is the cause of a high percentage of all road accidents. Some of these errors can be attributed to temporary individual failure, e.g. Irresponsible or highly emotionally influenced behaviour. In addition a substantial proportion is caused by limitations in the capability of humans to absorb information. With the object of reducing this proportion, a research programme was set up by the working group "the human as a vehicle driver". It is based on two sets of questions which were dealt with in experiments: (1) what information must a driver take in under certain traffic conditions? (2) what limits the absorption and processing of information? The investigations were limited mainly to the absorption and processing of optical information. (TRRL)
