HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE

FAHRBAHNDECKEN AUS ZEMENTBETON

Requirements which must be met in the selection of road paving materials from the point of view of users, maintenance and the occupiers of adjoining areas are discussed. The paper examines to what extent concrete pavements fulfil these criteria with regard to long life, high wear resistance, low maintenance costs and low noise nuisance. Following a review of the development of concrete roads - especially in Austria - since 1934 there are reports on the most recent developments in concrete highways such as the use of super-plasticisers, psz concrete, air entrainment by means of micro-spheres together with a discussion on the significance of these innovations in promoting the use of concrete in highway construction. /TRRL/
