FRICTION MEASUREMENTS ON RUNWAYS AND ROADS

FRIKTIONSMAETNING PAA RULLBANOR OCH VAEGAR

Satisfactory tyre friction is an indispensable condition for safe road traffic and for safe aircraft ground operation. This report begins with some simple, fundamental friction theories. Differences between aircraft tyres and car tyres are discussed. Special attention is paid to the hydroplaning phenomena. Then different methods to measure runway and road friction are discussed and critically examined. The different methods are examplified by descriptions of some realized test devices. The possibility to standardize a friction test method for runways and roads is discussed and the need for a standard test tyre is emphasized in the conclusion. (TRRL)
