State Maritime Academies

This articles discusses how a vibrant merchant marine is the role the state maritime academies (SMAs) play in educating and training future maritime professionals. These six academies with locations in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, California, and Michigan that produce more than 70 percent of the new United States (U.S.) officers with licenses to operate vessels of unlimited tonnage and any horsepower each year. Another 25 percent come from the (federal) U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York and remaining work their way up as seafarers without licensure. Even though the number of U.S.-flagged ships in international trade has fallen, there is an increase in demand for U.S. licensed mariners, primarily due to an aging maritime workforce.
