PERFORMANCE LIMITS OF ELECTRIC TRACTIVE UNITS

In the case of induction motors using single-phase current with a collector, limits are determined by mechanical, electrical and thermal constraints. The maximum power of a tractive unit with one-phase winding is 1,320 kW and that of one with two-phase winding is 1,760 kW. For a mixed current motor the maximum power is 2,400 kW. But because of the greater weight of the electrical equipment, the maximum power of the locomotive is only 10 percent greater. In the case of motors with three-phase current, the maximum power is 4,300 kW.
