Under laboratory conditions a valuable expanded shale lightweight concrete aggregate can be obtained from various shales of the Styrian Graywacke Zone. X-ray diffraction meter studies demonstrate the change in the expanded shale-mineral phase supply under various burning temperatures. For standard prisms of 40 x 40 X 160, concrete density of 1250 to 1400 kg/m3 and cement content of 300 kg portland cement, 375 M3 ready mixed concrete, compression strengths at 28 days of over 30 n/mm2 were obtained as well as thermal conductivity coefficients of 0.49 w/m degrees K.
