EMISSION OF POLLUTANTS AND FUEL CONSUMPTION OF MOTOR TRAFFIC ON THE GROSSGLOCKNER ALPINE HIGHWAY

This is a repot on Resarch Project BMBT 180. 71E were determined along the Grossglockner Alpine Highway by follows the topographical relief, which can lead to morphological damage to vegetation. Exhaust gas profiles were determined along the grossglockner alpine highway by means of test journeys. These test journeys deliberately followed the direction of the traffic flow. It was found that average speeds were about 35 km/h. From the test results for each type of vehicle averages were computed according to the proportion of total vehicle licences. About 70% of the total carbon-monoxide emission derived from up-hill travel and about 30% from down-hill journeys. A similar distribution was observed for fuel consumption and lead emission. The highest emissions occur where steep gradients, acceleration and high altitudes coincide. On the north ramp for uphill trips the mean co emission was found to be 0.08 nm3 CO per vehicle kilometre. On the busiest stretches at peak times the mean emission was 0.146 nm3 CO per vehicle kilometre. During 1975 according to specific fuel consumption figures vehicles travelling on the Grossglockner Highway used about 1.3 million litres of fuel. This led to the emission of about 360 kg of lead. Summarising, it can be said that on the Grossglockner Highway the amount of pollutants emitted by motor vehicles is almost as great as on a densely travelled main traffic artery of a large metropolis.
