The author reviews the progress made by the Technical Committee 1-6 "Visual Signalization" of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE): (1) definition of the colours of traffic signals with tolerances represented by chromaticity zones in CIE diagrams; (2) setting up of a recommendation on surface colours: mention is made of the technical difficulties arising in the studies of conventional colours, fluorescent and reflective colours, because of day and night vision phenomena. Introduction of a 4th category: highly conspicuous colours; (3) programme of work of the technical committee is as follows: (A) the report by the USA on reflectors has progressed fairly quickly (terminology, photometry and colorimetry); (B) report on light sources; (C) report on coloured filters; (D) report on flashing lights.
