THE BASIS OF DESIGN FOR HIGHWAY TUNNEL VENTILATION

BEMESSUNGSGRUNDLAGEN FUER DIE LUEFTUNG VON STRASSENTUNNELN

This is a report on Research Project BMBT 088. A summary is given of the results of the consultations of the Austrian team of experts on tunnel ventilation with consideration of the results of the following research projects: 036, 037, 038, 087, 100, 105. After a statement of meteorological principles there follows a discussion of the sources of danger in the tunnel, such as pollutants in the air, reduction in visibility and accidents and their elimination. Starting with the estimation of traffic density, the emission of pollutants and poisonous substances and substances which impair visibility, methods for determining the amount of fresh air required are derived and explained with the aid of examples. The various ventilation systems and the factors governing their choice are discussed in a comprehensive manner together with the aerodynamics of tunnel ventilation. Finally questions of control of the ventilation system and the type and location of the necessary instrumentation are discussed. (TRRL)
