VERTICAL-LAY VESSEL MAY CUT OFFSHORE PIPELINE COST

Circumstances exist where use of lay barges for offshore pipelines run into technical difficulties or become uneconomical. Most lay vessels are depth limited. The author describes the use of a vertical-lay vessel developed for offshore pipelaying that may extend the depths to which lines are laid and also can reduce costs. A comparison of conventional and vertical methods is given.
