PARAMETRIC EVALUATION OF SUSCEPTIBILITY OF CU-NI ALLOYS TO SULFIDE INDUCED CORROSION IN SEA WATER

Recently the U. S. Navy has been carrying out investigations to determine cause(s) of accelerated corrosion of 90/10 copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) piping in several systems of newly constructed ships. Experiments were performed to determine susceptibility of 90/10 and 70/10 Cu-Ni alloys to sulfide induced corrosion as related to sulfide concentration, seawater velocity, and duration of sulfide exposure. Results showed that both alloys undergo localized attack in seawater environments with as little as 0.007 mg/L sulfide.
