The a26 motorway is a transverse link between northern France and the south-east and south which avoids Paris, consequently a link between Great Britain and Italy, and with Belgium. Details are given of the geology of the regions traversed, pavement design, engineering structures, earthworks. Peak traffic around 1980 is estimated to be in the region of 10 to 15000 vehicles per day in the mining area and 12000 vehicles per day between Arras and Reims. /TRRL/
