MATHEMATICAL METHODS FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF TRANSPORT NETWORKS

METODI MATEMATICI DE OTTIMIZZAZIONE DELLE RETI DI TRASPORTO

A transport system model may be optimised through continuous variables (mathematical analysis) or discrete variables (combined analysis). The method to be applied should be selected according to whether the transport demand is variable or fixed. In the latter case account must be taken of the various types of constraint that can be associated with the criterion of minimum transport cost. In this article mathematical analysis includes linear, nonlinear and geometric procedures, and combined analysis refers to the methods of branch and bound. (TRRL)
