Northern Sydney Freight Corridor : challenges in developing an efficient bridge design for the ETTT ECRL off-ramp viaduct

The Northern Sydney Freight Corridor (NSFC) program is a joint Australian and NSW Government initiative to improve the capacity and reliability of freight trains between Strathfield in Sydney and Broadmeadow in Newcastle. The Epping to Thornleigh Third Track (ETTT) is a part of the NSFC that provides a separate track over a length of six kilometres situated to the north of Epping station. The entire project was delivered by the ETTT Alliance for Transport of NSW. The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line (ECRL) Off-Ramp Viaduct is a portion of the ETTT located 200m the north of Epping station on the Main North Line over a distance of 150m. During the detailed design and delivery phase the viaduct was redesigned to accommodate the various constraints identified during the review of the construction methodology. This paper gives some background to this process and discusses the various options that were considered before selecting and constructing the final option.
